Iron is important in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. A deficiency in iron can lead to anaemia a condition where the blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells. Some of the symptoms of anaemia can include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, pale skin and dizziness. Bleeding can cause iron loss therefore women with heavy periods may need to take iron supplements. Good sources of iron include meat, beans, nuts, dried fruit, wholegrains, most dark-green leafy vegetables – such as watercress and curly kale.

Always keep iron supplements out of the reach of children as very high doses of iron can be fatal.
